PPC Worship Committee Teams, Duties and Contacts

The PPC Worship Committee’s principle responsibility is to provide support to the Pastor in all aspects of Worship Services including music. It also provides an opportunity for the members of the congregation to participate in the life of the church and worship by providing such support. The Teams’ Leaders and the Committee meet once per month except June, July, and August. Members of the congregation may forward their comments and suggestions about Worship Services to the members of the Committee or appropriate Team Leaders, and should contact the Team Leaders if they wish to volunteer. Everyone is encouraged to participate.

The Worship Committee

The Committee itself is comprised of the Chairman and Vice (or Co) Chairman, both of whom are Elders on the current Session, the Director of Music, the Team Leaders, a pastoral advisor, and any member of PPC who wishes to participate on a regular basis. The committee has as its responsibility the effective operation of the teams, to review any comments or suggestions made by members of PPC regarding Worship and act accordingly, and to be innovative in making the Worship experience meaningful for the members. Specific routine duties include:

  • recruiting Elders and Deacons as Communion Servers (See Instruc. for Comm Servers)
  • ordering special Bulletin covers and formatting the Bulletin
  • arrange for changing of paraments
  • order pew supplies
  • review of Comment Cards and proper disposition
  • publication of Lenten and/or Advent Devotionals
  • Special event Services and Services conducted by the Session
  • maintenance of the Vestibule, Sanctuary and Epinos, including changing decorations
  • to fill in when team members are unavailable
  • composition and updating of Lay Leader Instructions
  • composing the annual budget for Worship, monitoring it and related Funds
  • composing and presenting the written and oral Annual Report on Worship
  • obtain and instruct guest preachers (See Worship Choreography and Matrix, How We
    Worship).

Music

Music is a very important part of the Worship Services at PPC. We are fortunate to have an excellent classically trained Director of Music skilled at being both Organist and Choir Director. Volunteers are sought for all choirs. Choirs do not practice during Jun/Jul/Aug. Soloists and instrumentalists should also make their talents known to the Music Director. The Sanctuary Choir has a paid Section Leader who is also a Soloist. Guest artists are sometimes invited. A tradition at PPC is the Fathers’ Day Men’s Chorus. On occasion, PPC has had a “Hymn Sing” Service. The Music Director and Director of Christian Education combine efforts for a Christmas children’s pageant.

Greeters

Members of the congregation are asked to serve as “Greeters” in the Narthex at Sunday Worship Services. They arrive twenty minutes before the Service and greet members, guests and visitors, and answer any questions. A sign-up sheet is kept in the Fellowship Hall for those who would like to perform this service. They receive a copy of PPC’s How We Worship the week before they serve. It is a wonderful opportunity for singles, couples, students and families to get to know the congregation.

Ushers

Ushers arrive ˝ hour before the Service and prepare the Sanctuary for Worship; advise of need for pew supplies; distribute Bulletins; assist with seating; collect the Offering; secure the building; obtain emergency services. They typically volunteer for one Sunday a month. Some volunteers act as alternates. See Instructions for Ushers.

Communion Preparers

The Communion Preparers obtain and prepare the bread (including gluten free wafers) and wine (grape juice) for those Sundays on which Communion is served (typically once per month). They also maintain the Communion linens, plates and cups. Volunteers typically perform this service twice per year. Ask for a copy of Instructions for Communion Preparation.

Flower Sharers

Sunday Worship Services have bouquets of flowers donated by members of the congregation in honor or memory of someone or something. If the donors do not want the flowers, the Sharers distribute them after the Service according to the directions of the Pastors. If there is not a designated recipient, the flowers typically go to the homebound, assisted care facilities, or others for whom we believe it will brighten their day. Congregants should make the Sharers aware of anyone who would appreciate receipt of the flowers. Volunteers typically serve for two nonconsecutive months during the year.

Wedding Guild

Members of the Wedding Guild are the point of contact for those who hold their weddings in the Sanctuary and who may also use the Fellowship Hall for receptions. The Pastor is the contact for the couple, but the guild is available before and after the ceremony to assure access to the church, assist with decorations, and arrange for seating in the Fellowship Hall.

Advent and Christmas Decorations

Advent and Christmas are special times in the life of the church and call for special decorations. Volunteers assist with planning, obtaining and hanging decorations. Decorations are typically hung on the Saturday before the first Sunday in Advent. In 2009 a Greening of the Church Worship Service will be instituted at which time the church will be decorated excepting those items which require ladders or are difficult. The candleholders for the Christmas Eve candlelight Service are installed after the Service on the Sunday before Christmas Eve.
